Swedish Butter Braids
Source: Cookie
Recipes Online
These traditional Swedish cookies are a little bit time consuming to make, but
they are worth the effort. They are very attractive, but in a very simple
classic way. They nicely complement the more "bells and whistles" cookies that I
make each year. They have a rich vanilla flavor that melt in your mouth.
1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Whip in the
cream and vanilla until creamy and smooth. In a small bowl whisk the flour and
baking powder, then slowly add to the butter mixture. Turn the dough out onto a
lightly floured surface and knead quickly. Return to the bowl, cover, and chill
for 4 hours. Take a small ball of dough and roll into strips about 7 inches
long. Take two strips and twist together into a circle and smooth the seams with
a moist finger. Place on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake 10 to 13 minutes, or
until golden. Cool on the sheets for 5 minutes, then carefully remove onto wire
racks. Store in an airtight container or freeze.
