serves 4

1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
2 red chilies, seeded and finely chopped
1 pound ground beef
1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
14 oz can kidney beans, drained
14 oz can chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup strong black coffee
Salt and ground pepper
8 taco shells
Shredded lettuce plus sour cream and paprika, to serve

Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion, garlic, and chilies for 3-4 minutes until beginning to soften.
Add the ground beef and five-spice powder and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring until the meat begins to brown.
Add the kidney beans, tomatoes, and coffee. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes until the mixture is thick and fairly dark. Season to taste. Fill the taco shells with shredded lettuce, then pile in the chili mixture. Top with a spoonful of sour cream and a shake of paprika and serve.
