Hugs & Kisses
A Valentine message that's sweet enough to eat. This year,
butter up your sweethearts with a batch of sugar cookie hugs and kisses. Make
bite size "X's" and "O's" for a bunch of friends or pair of
giant letters for a special sweetie. Here's how.
On a floured surface, roll out a batch of your favorite homemade or storebought
sugar cookie dough (it should be thoroughly chilled) to 1/4-inch thickness.
Then, use a butter knife to cut out the cookies. Remind your child that giant
letters need to be wider than smaller ones to keep them from breaking easily.
Bake the cookies according to the recipe directions. (You may have to adjust the
baking time, depending on the size of your cookies, but be sure to remove them
before the edges brown.) Let them cool on a wire rack. Then, frost with
Buttercream Icing and sprinkle a tinted sugar; if desired.
Buttercream Icing
1 1/4 cups sifted sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Beat together the sugar; butter; and vanilla. Add the milk a few drops at a time
until the mixture is spreadable. Makes 1 1/2 cups.
